Australia Whale Watching
There’s a good reason that southern whales migrate to Australia each year – our pristine warm waters and abundance of sea life offer the ideal safe breeding, calving, feeding and resting habitat for these amazing sea mammals! Each year between May and September, a variety of whale species leave the Antarctic and head off on the 16,000 km journey towards Australia’s warmer waters. While here, the whales are easily sighted from a number of locations along the east and west coastlines.
While the Humpback Whale is generally the most popular and commonly spotted, Southern Right, Blue and Sperm Whales are also regularly seen. There are many more species that are supported by Australian waters though – too many to list here, in fact! Regardless of the species, all migrate to the Aussie coast for the same reason – to feed, breed and give birth. As a result, you’re extremely likely to see mother whales with their calves during the second half of the migration period. There’s no better time to see them than with their calves because this is also when they are the most active, teaching their young to swim, feed, tail slap, breach the surface and perform other underwater skills and acrobatics. The calves are simply adorable too and seeing them really gives you a sense of how amazingly intelligent and family orientated these mammals are!
