Tour Description
"This is one of the prettiest locations that I have yet seen in the unoccupied parts of South Australia" - So wrote explorer Edward John Eyre on 26th June 1840, when describing the landscape of the Southern Flinders Ranges.
This special Banksia Adventure will provide you with rare access to one of Australia’s most sought-after destinations. In the Southern Flinders Ranges, there are gorges to explore, wildlife to encounter and adventures of the most remarkable kind to write home about. The Ranges are best known for their natural beauty. The spectacular gorges offer their own magnificence and character and are easily accessible.
Your guide will take you north from Adelaide along the shores of Spencer Gulf, with the waters of the gulf on one side and the mountain ranges on the other. The journey past historic ports provides and opportunity to reflect on the importance of this trade route in by-gone days.
After morning tea, it’s time to leave the main highway and travel east through Horrocks Pass. The plains spread out behind you as you climb high into the ranges. This is classic Southern Flinders terrain and offers spectacular views over the gulf from Hancocks Lookout.
Continue your journey into the Southern Flinders Ranges as you travel towards the country town of Wilmington. Next stop is Alligator Gorge, which is within Mount Remarkable National Park and is the premier natural attraction in the Southern Flinders Ranges. This spectacular gorge cut through ancient quartzite by the Alligator Creek, is easily accessible to visitors along a 10 minute walking trail.
Visit the historic town of Melrose for lunch and see Mount Remarkable before travelling south through picturesque countryside and historic villages into the Clare Valley for a wine tasting. Today, this region is home to many boutique wineries and large company vineyards. These vineyards have shown their consistency from producing port and sherry through the 1940's, to the table wines that the consumer market is demanding today.
All too soon it is time to head home. But even this provides more opportunities as you drive through some of South Australia’s most picturesque countryside back to Adelaide.
