Only five hours north of Brisbane, Lady Musgrave Island is a 35-acre (14 hectare) coral cay nestled within the Outer Southern Great Barrier Reef. With easy access from the town of 1770, this gorgeous island is recognised as a National Park and an important bird area.

With over 3000 acres of fascinating living reef surrounding the island, Lady Musgrave is renowned for its plethora of sea life and unique deepwater coral lagoon. Besides a number of colourful corals and tropical fish that you can view while snorkelling, scuba diving or via semi-submersible, the reef surrounding the island is also home to The harmless whitetip reef and leopard sharks, as well as green, leatherback and loggerhead turtles, who can frequently be found relaxing on coral bommies. In fact, the green and loggerhead turtles nest on the island, meaning there’s often a lot of excitement when hatchlings emerge.

On the island itself, a huge number of birds flock and nest within the pisonia forests, she oaks and pandanus. Bird watchers will delight in spotting a number of species of  terns, silver gulls, wedge-tailed shearwaters (mutton birds), ruddy turnstone, grey-tailed and wandering tattler, bar-tailed godwit, Pacific golden and lesser sand plovers, eastern reef egret, pied and sooty oystercatchers and Capricorn silvereyes, among others. Budding or experienced stargazers will also delight in the phenomenally clear views of the heavens above, with unparalleled views of the stars and meteor showers. A tour to Lady Musgrave Island is truly a ticket to paradise!
